Veterans Day
Columbus, Georgia is fortunate to have Fort Benning as a close neighbor to veterans-dayour community. Fort Benning is a United States Army post that supports active-duty military, reserve component soldiers, retirees, and family members. The history of the close military base provides us with opportunities to learn more about our country and learn more about the men and women who give their all to for your freedom.

November 11 is an important day in American history. It is the day that signaled the end of World War I in 1918. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 “Armistice Day”, commemorating our soldiers for their heroism. In 1938, the United States Congress approved an act starting November 11 as a legal holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace and honoring those who sacrificed their lives in search of it. President Eisenhower officially changed the name to “Veterans Day” in 1954 to honor all soldiers who sacrificed everything for their country.

Veterans Day is a celebration of those who gave their lives to keep our country and our freedom safe. Every year on November 11th, Arlington National Cemetery holds a memorial service to honor over 400,000 soldiers who gave up their lives to protect and serve the United States. Many schools and businesses are closed nationwide on Veterans Day to show respect and honor to those who fought selflessly for our country. Without the hard work and sacrifices these brave men and women made, we would not be the country we are today.

On Monday, November 11, Columbus Water Works encourages you to thank a soldier for their service and remember the impact their sacrifices have made in your life.

From all of us at Columbus Water Works, “Thank you for your service, your sacrifices, and your bravery.”
