Memorial Day 2020
memorial day 2020Memorial Day is coming up fast, and our community has begun preparations for celebrations honoring the lives lost during times of war. While celebrations may be different this year, remembering and honoring those who lost their lives is important. Without their sacrifices, we would not have the freedom we have today.

Memorial Day was previously known as “Decoration Day.” After the Civil War ended in 1865, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers, communities would join together to decorate the graves of the fallen with flowers. After World War 1, Decoration Day became Memorial Day to include fallen soldiers in every American War.

In 1971, Memorial Day became a national holiday that is celebrated on the last Monday of May. Congress also established a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. (local time) for all Americans to pause in an act of national unity.

On Monday, May 25 please join us for a moment of silence at 3 p.m., as we join together as a county and recognize the sacrifices that were made so we could be free.

In observance of Memorial Day, Columbus Water Works’ offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2020. If you experience a water related emergency, please call 706-649-3400. Emergency crews will be available.
