Giving Back During the Holiday Season

While spending time with friends and family is important during the holiday season, giving back to the community is equally as important. There are people in the community who are low on resources to celebrate the holiday season and it’s important we remember to help them in any way we can. Did you know that engaging in service projects can be a bonding experience for the whole family and can teach children how to give back to the community? If you are looking for a new way to fellowship together during the holidays, we suggest checking out some of the options below.

  1. Double the recipe. You and your family can join together to make many delicious holiday treats to offer a little homemade comfort to those in need. Check out Everyday Health for tips on how to bake with substitutes to avoid possible allergic reactions.

  2. Donate to a food bank. Picking out food items from the grocery store can be an easy way to give back. Take the family on a shopping trip to pick up nonperishable goods for a local food bank or church. Extra food is always a huge help around the holidays.

  3. Visit a nursing home. You and your family can decorate holiday cards and make small holiday gifts for the residents. Many people in these homes welcome extra cheer and visitors, especially around the holidays.

  4. Clean out the toy box. Kids can donate some of the lightly-used games and toys they own to donate to kids who do not have any. Alternatively, you can also take the kids to the store to shop for new toys to donate.

  5. Volunteer around the local area. The whole family can come together to help make a difference within the community. United Way is a local organization with many volunteer opportunities for anyone looking to help out. Check out United Way to see all of the different ways you and your family can make a positive impact this holiday season.

Giving back to the community is an important gesture that can highly impact someone’s life. If you do not have the time to get the family together to complete a service project, consider monetary donations instead. The amount of the donation does not matter, any amount can make a difference.

Columbus Water Works would like to thank all of those who help our community. Your generous efforts and donations make a difference for those in need.
